One of Britain’s best street-food start-ups branches out

The popular hummus and pita bar Humpit will soon be opening a new branch located on Church Street in York. The Yorkshire-based vegan food business prides itself on serving “great-tasting, down-to-earth hummus, falafel, salads and drinks.”

Once opened, the Church Street addition will be it’s fourth store, as there are two Humpit restaurants in Leeds and one in Sheffield.

The restaurant offers three different meal options, all priced at £4.50. Their loaded pita includes hummus, falafel, fresh salads, pickles and sauces. They also have a salad bowl on offer, and customers can build their own from a choice of salads, hummus and falafel. You can also order a hummus bowl, which comes with whole chickpeas, parsley, olive oil and a fresh pita.

Customers can also add any extra toppings and sides and all this delicious food can be washed down with their selection of drinks, including their juice of the day and fresh lemonade.

Customers don’t even have to go into the store to order their food, as diners can pre-order their lunch using their phone or can get their food delivered right to their door.

Leeds entrepreneur, Jonathan Phillips is the brains behind Humpit. His love of middle eastern cuisine inspired him to launch the Humpit brand in 2014. His food proved to be extremely popular, and in 2015 he won the Street Food category in the Virgin Foodpreneur awards.

Jonathan plans to open six new restaurants within the next two years, aided by an investment he managed to secure from a private fund.

Humpit has managed to tap into the rapidly-growing vegan food market. According to the animal protection group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), one in five people aged between 16-24 now identify themselves as vegetarian or vegan.

Incredibly, the number of people identifying as vegan has more than tripled to more than half a million since 2006, according to The Vegan Society.
